Canon 60D Vs T3i - How Do These Two Digital SLR Cameras Stack Up?

Maybe you will question why the Canon Rebel T3i vs 60D question is even worth thinking about here. Do they have enough differences to even be marketed together? Without doubt, it is something Canon must have thought about long and hard. It could be puzzling because they seem to be aimed at the identical digital camera market share.

Upon further consideration, you will find that there are indeed three digital SLRs in the Canon digital camera line-up with the indentical 18-megapixel image sensor. The other camera is the 7D from Canon. The plot thickens!

In spite of the fact that the 7D shares the same image sensor, it's simply not in the same ball park as the Canon Rebel T3i or 60D. The 7D is more of a semi-pro to pro level camera, which is proven by the market and buyers that are attracted to it. But let's not talk of the 7D for this article.

The Canon Rebel T3i is a legitimate upgrade of the previous Rebel (the T2i) since it inherits or improves upon all the hardware and software in that former model. However, there is quite a bit of controversy among pixel peepers about the legitimacy of the Canon 60D being called an "upgrade" because of the fact that it does not improve on all the hardware and software of the 50D.

  2. QUESTION:
which dslr canon models can do remote flash like nikon?
you know how some (maybe most?) nikon dslr models (like 70d) can use external flash like sb-800 and "remote" the flash using the "built-in" function (sorry, not sure what the technical term of it is).

so i was wondering, is there any canon dslr models that have this function? from what i know, most of the canon dslrs will need to buy an extra transmitter and attach this to the camera in order to do "remote" flash.

    thanks a bunch!

    • ANSWER:
The Canon 7D I believe has a built in wireless transmitter to fire the flash off camera. There isn't a 70D Nikon btw. The Nikon models that can do wireless flash (with the built-in pop-up flash acting as 'commander') are the D70, D80, D90, D200, D300 & D700. The compatible Nikon speedlights that work with the system are SB600, SB800, SB900 and the small SB-R200. Nikon call it their AWL/CLS system (stands for Advanced Wireless Lighting/Creative Lighting System). Basically, you can control compatible speedlights off camera in either TTL or manual mode.

You are correct in that Canon users (apart from the 7D) have to buy an additional ST-E2 unit to mount on the camera to control Canon speedlights off camera. The other downside for Canon users is that you can't have rear curtain sync with off camera flashes (even Canon's own brand!). Nikon does rear curtain sync with its own flashes, plus any others fired by wireless remote.

Of course, as an alternative, you can buy any old manually adjustable speedlight (eg Vivitar 285HV) and a set of wireless triggers & you're good to go for off camera flash on ANY camera!!

PS Buying a third party flash & set of triggers will be a LOT cheaper than buying a Canon speedlight. Radio triggers will also not be limited by distance/line of sight as the Canon/Nikon IR optical systems are.

  3. QUESTION:
What are the main differences between the Canon dSLR models 20D and 350D (Digital Rebel XT)?
I am looking to get either Digital Rebel XT (350D) or 20D, both in the Canon EOS series of dSLR cameras. What are the big differences that make the 20D cost 500 dollars more than the 350D?

I know the 20D shoots up to 5 FPS compared to the 350D's 3FPS. Plus the 20D's times for shutter lag is about .04 less than the 350's .1 of a second. Also the magnesium alloy body versus the plastic body.

Anything else that you know about?

    • ANSWER:
      * the better build quality extends to the shutter life: the 20D is rated for 100,000 actuations vs. 50,000 for the 350D (some sources put them both at around 60,000 however)
      * faster and more accurate autofocus
      * deeper buffer: 26 jpgs on the D20 vs. 14 on the D350
      * slightly bigger and brighter viewfinder
      * average of 1,000 shots per charge vs. 600 for the D350
      * ease of use (extra joystick and dial vs. a 4-way pad)
... with the things you aleready mentioned, thats's a pretty impressive list.
I'm a Nikon guy myself and earlier this year I had a similar dilemma with the D70 vs. the D200. Until I held both cameras side by side and looked through the viewfinders. After that, the D200 was a no brainer. I suggest you do the same with the 20D and the 350D - the viewfinder and handeling are perhaps the most important features. You can probably get really great deals on the 20D too, now that the 30D is out.

  4. QUESTION:
Between nikon and canon DSLR camera ?
for about 3 years. i've been using canon 1000D. This camera is suitable for a beginner,
now, i wanted to buy a new dslr camera. i already know how to use dslr camera.
which one should i buy ? what model is the best ? canon or nikon is the best ?

    • ANSWER:
If you've invested in canon equipment you'd better stick with canon. If all you own is a 1000d and a 18-55 you should look at the nikon as well and make a decision based on what you prefer. There is no overall best.

  5. QUESTION:
Approximate cost of models of extra lenses for Canon DSLR EOS Rebel XSi camera for poor light indoor closeups?

    • ANSWER:
Close ups as in Macro or as in telephoto shots?

You can do the research on the B&H Photo site. Look for lenses with f/2.8 or faster apertures.

Look under macro lenses for close up photography
Look under telephoto lenses for shooting from far away.
